If you know me, you know it’s no secret that I have a sweet tooth. I ADORE delicious sweet treats, from handcrafted chocolates and fudge to designer pastries and everything in between. Luckily for my fellow sweet-a-holics and myself, Sugar Cloud Bakery in the heart of Cashiers blesses us with an array of decadent treats to satisfy our palates.
On a recent trip to Sugar Cloud, I was greeted by the warm smile of the owner and head baker, Serena. As I chatted with her about life, the current global situation, and of course sweets, I was surrounded by the gorgeous decor and a friendly atmosphere. I sat down with Serena and hosted a sort of a Q&A with her to get an insider look at her passion for baking.
Serena’s love for baking is not a new one, it’s been a part of her life since an early age when she was in charge of the small cakes for her family to enjoy on Sunday. When asked about the primary inspiration for her baking passion, she cited her Grandmother as being the driving force of her dream. Her grandmother, a sweet and warm woman of Austrian descent, lived on a three-hundred-acre farm where an abundance of home-grown fruits was readily available. Serena and her grandmother would take the fruits and create the purest form of farm-to-table goodies for the family, all made with extreme care and love! Serena now hopes to continue to harness her grandmother’s spirit of hospitality and love as the driving inspiration for her bakery.
When asked what she finds particularly special about being a small business owner in Cashiers, the answer was clear for Serena. The attitude of gratitude of the residents and the relaxed feeling of the Plateau is one of the predominant traits that make the area so uniquely special. I personally agree wholeheartedly with Serena on this; our area is indeed so special for those very reasons!
I also wanted to explore with Serena the newest line of cakes Sugar Cloud is releasing - the “Sexy Cake” line! I am so excited about this line of cakes, as the goal is to be the go-to resource for our community to have the privilege of enjoying gourmet, beautiful, and “sexy” cakes for events of all sizes. I asked Serena, “What’s your personal favorite sweet treat you carry regularly?” The answer was multi-faceted! The first answer was the labor-intensive macarons, then came the gorgeous champagne cupcakes, then last but MOST certainly not least, the fresh, handmade doughnuts. I think any patron can agree that really everything that’s available through Sugar Cloud is phenomenal.
At the end of our chat, Serena wanted to be sure to include a massive “thank you” to all those who have been so supportive of her business, particularly those in recent times. She mentioned how immensely grateful she is for the local backing, and how appreciative she is for the abundance of love the community shows!
