august twenty-twenty events

Happy August! Although we are still “in the thick of it" with our pandemic world, the Plateau is still thriving! Our community leaders and members have utilized and harnessed this time to think outside of the box with events we know and love, all in an effort to keep our spirits high and promote a sense of normalcy in our little slice of heaven. I’ve highlighted some of the events to come this month, hope to “see” you at some of them!

High Falls Dam Release - August 8th

Calling all experienced paddlers and onlookers! During the summer months, the Lake Glenville Dam releases whitewater into the west fork of the Tuckasegee River, creating class IV rapids over a 5.5-mile stretch. I’ve highlighted the High Falls Trail before, but this opportunity is unlike any other to witness the massive amounts of water that will be released and the creation of such amazing rapids! WARNING: High flows and the natural environment where such flows occur can create dangerous conditions in the bypassed reach. Duke Energy releases these flows solely to comply with its license requirements. Duke Energy neither encourages nor discourages recreational use of high flows by the public. Any recreational use by the public during high flows should be limited to experienced boaters.

Friends of the Library Poetry Night - August 13th

Join the Friends of the Library for a virtual night of poetry appreciation! The night will feature several compositions from the rich history of American and English poets. To learn more or to register for the Zoom, click here.

Cashiers Designer Showhouse - August 21st & 22nd

The annual Cashiers Designer Showhouse is going virtual this year! The Cashiers Designer Showhouse is the Cashiers Historical Society's signature and largest fundraising event in which designers from many areas are invited to collaborate in decorating a selected home. In partnership with Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, CDS raises vital funds to support their phenomenal mission and cultural programming. Typically, the CDS would be an in-person extravaganza, but this year has shaped up a little differently. For more information on ticketing and VIP Preview Days, click here.
